Doing the driving duties for his father, The Lagoon trainer Steve Turnbull, Mitch Turnbull joined Brad Hewitt in steering a winning double at the Goulburn Paceway.
His first success came aboard Major Bracken, a three-year-old Hes Watching x Majoress gelding who has been more than handy since joining the Turnbulls' Radiant Lodge team.
Last season he posted two wins and a pair of thirds from his four starts and he built on that form with an all the way effort over the 1710 metres at Goulburn.
The $3.10 chance showed blistering gate speed, easily crossing his rivals from barrier four. While Major Bracken was eyeballed down the back straight by No Nay Never, when Turnbull asked him to give again he responded, clocking a 27.9 third quarter.
It saw him with a handy lead at the top of the home straight and while challenges did come, Major Bracken was good enough to hold them off, clocking a 1:55.8 winning mile rate.
The second leg of Turnbull's winning double came with $18 chance Firestorm Red. While he had won a Group 3 at Menangle late last year, the five-year-old horse was not expected to feature in a field which included the likes of Bathurst track record holder Fouroeight.
He travelled one out and three back before peeling four wide through the final bend and surging to the lead, beating Fouroeight by 2.3m in a 1:55.9 mile rate.
