And the good news is that restoring the 144-year-old Bathurst Railway Station to its former glory is expected to be completed in mid-2021.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the restoration work, including the removal and replacement of six chimneys and restoration of the exterior sandstone, would help preserve the iconic station's heritage.
"Bathurst Station is a much-loved local landmark with a rich history and design that is unique to early railway architecture," Mr Toole said.
"Bathurst has a proud railway history, and since it opened in 1876, the station has been at the heart of it, connecting tens of thousands of travellers to destinations across NSW and the country.
"It's one of our city's finest buildings, so it's great to see it being restored so many more generations to come can share in its history."
Sydney Trains Acting Chief Executive Suzanne Holden said the work was part of a $790,000 investment from the NSW Government, through the Sydney Trains Major Periodical Maintenance Program and Annual Works Program.
IN NEWS AROUND BATHURST:
"As custodians of many historical buildings around NSW, Sydney Trains recognises that heritage is vitally important to the communities we serve.
"We have engaged independent heritage experts to advise on this work and I am looking forward to seeing the work completed," Ms Holden said.
NSW TrainLink Chief Executive Pete Allaway said there would be no significant disruption to customer services or amenities during the work.
"Bathurst Station is one of the largest hubs on of the NSW TrainLink network and I know our customers and staff are looking forward to seeing this iconic station restored," Mr Allaway said.
News of the upgrade at the train station follows on from confirmation last week that a $7 million dollar upgrade will begin at Bathurst Police Station in coming weeks.
Mr Toole confirmed work at the police station will begin as early as next month.
