Training numbers have been up so far throughout the pre-season at Norton Park and Mortimer likes what he sees, touching on the exciting youth coming through the ranks out of the club's under 18s side and the older heads that have returned to training ahead of the looming winter.
Mortimer said the recruitment of Anthony Redfern as first division coach has been key in getting some of those older guys, like former star five-eighth Matt Clarke, back on the paddock.
The ex-NRL half says 'Red', as Redfern is known among bush footy circles, is a hugely popular figure and, so far, has proved "the perfect foil" for Mortimer as his long awaited debut in the Group 10 coaching chair kicks off.
"Red's been great. He's so passionate about the game," Mortimer said.
"He's the perfect foil for me as reserve grade coach. He's got that wealth of experience. He's a pleasure to work with and I'm sure he'll get the best out of his group."
CYMS' under 18s sides was one of the best throughout the 2020 Western league formed to give juniors a chance to take the field after the COVID-19 pandemic forced Group 10 to cancel its senior competitions.
The likes of brothers Addison and Kaden Williams were both training with the senior group on Monday, while talented halves Josh Board and Pat Williams were also in the mix.
Mortimer is buoyed by the numbers at training so far.
The former Parramatta Eel, Sydney Rooster and Gold Coast Titan said CYMS' 2021 squad will mirror that of 2020, one which looked likely to travel deep into the Group 10 season after storming to a memorable Bathurst Knockout triumph.
"We haven't recruited a lot, we haven't had to," Mortimer said.
"We've kept a lot of the boys from last year and I have every confidence in them. And we have kept the 18s from last year and added depth and enthusiasm.
"We've got a few of the older boys keen there, they look hungry. You need the older heads ... it's now just about looking to see how it'll work together. It's going to make my job picking the side tough," he added.
CYMS will finalise trails for 2021 in the coming days, as well as a date for a season launch.
