Bathurst Regional Art Gallery is currently seeking people aged 15-25 years in Bathurst to apply for the inaugural BRAG Youth Advocates Program.
The program is a year-long pilot project that consists of a group of young people meeting monthly develop ideas for programs, events, exhibitions and other activities that may be delivered in partnership with BRAG for their friends, families and the broader community.
Member for Bathurst, Paul Toole, announced over $7,500 in funding for the program last week, saying he is excited to see the program developed.
He said it will help the art gallery target and develop new audiences.
Through the program meetings will be peer-led, with support provided by BRAG staff, allowing for young people to gain valuable life skills such as creative thinking, decision making and negotiation as well as express their ideas and aspirations.
"BRAG Youth Advocates is a first for a regional art gallery, a program that is led by young people and creating activities and programs for young people," BRAG Director, Sarah Gurich said.
"This is an exciting opportunity for young people of Bathurst to tell BRAG what they want, and for BRAG to listen and respond to the needs and concerns of young people."
The program will consist of monthly meetings when the group will meet to discuss ideas, strategies, opportunities, and events.
The BRAG Youth Advocates will be provided with a budget to use for projects and two artist-led workshops with artists, both to be decided by the group.
The projects could be a weekend arts festival, a pop-up exhibition, or a community participatory public art project.
Further opportunities include networking with other gallery youth collectives, such as with Museum of Contemporary Art and Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney and the Tate in the UK (via video) will also be developed.
Participants must be willing to commit to monthly meetings over at least 12 months at BRAG.
Each participant will receive a $25 spend local gift card for attending each session, transport subsidy is offered and each session will include food and drinks.
Applications close on 22 February, successful applicants will be notified accordingly with the first meeting to be held in early March.
