The new digital music course sees MitCon branching out into audio production lessons for the first time, with staff member and well-respected local musician Dave Webb chairing the course.
MitCon executive director Graham Sattler said the conservatorium has been wanting to offer the course for some time.
"We have a couple of students already enrolled and we're keen to get this course rolling as a serious tuition offering," Dr Sattler said.
"Dave is really enthusiastic about helping musicians develop their production skills, as well as his own, and this course will utilise his impressive skills to help students understand the complex nature of sound production."
The course involves lessons on basic recording techniques, audio production, sound design and how to operate a digital audio workstation [DAW].
Dr Sattler said many MitCon students have given songwriting a crack, but have always expressed a desire to know their way around the production process.
"For many students, it can be overwhelming trying to get a grasp of the recording process, whereas it's really an exercise in experimentation and trial and error," he said.
"Every musician comes up with their own material and with this course, we want to give students the opportunity to feel confident in producing quality compositions."
Webb has self-produced his own music for a number of years, and is currently in the process of releasing a retrospective series of singles from his career in music.
Dr Sattler said the course is offered in-person and online.
"The great thing about digital music is that it thrives off being taught across a variety of mediums," he said.
"Our goal to reach out into contemporary aspects of music, and this course is certainly part of that parcel to modernise our image."
