The day, raises money for Ronald McDonald House Charities Orange, which supports sick children and their families from the Central and Far West.

Every dollar raised from the event stays in Orange and ensures Ronald McDonald House can keep its doors open.

Rebecca Walsh, executive, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), said thanks to the initiative of Bathurst High Principal Ken Barwick, Wear Red Day has grown to become a major focus of fundraising for the charity.

She said not only does the day raise vital funds, but also helps build awareness of how RMHC Orange provides a range of services which "wrap around" families in their time of need, in what often can be a life threatening situation for their baby, child or adolescent.

Wear Red Day began five years ago with just a handful of schools, but since then it has been Mr Barwick's dream to continue to expand the day.

Last year over 60 schools, pre-schools and businesses joined in the spirit of the day by dressing up in red and making a gold coin donation to the cause.

Bathurst High School Captain, Zoe Peters, said all the kids at school love being part of the day.

"I think everyone knows where the money is going and the great work Ronald McDonald House does."
