Sunday's second Super 2 and 3 combined event at Mount Panorama was one wild ride for Bathurst driver Michael Anderson.
Anderson rose from fourth on the Super 3 grid to the top of the standings when he passed race one winner Jon McCorkindale down Conrod Straight on the last of the event's 12 laps.
It was smooth sailing all the way though the race for Anderson in his Ford Falcon FG as he moved past Nash Morris and Reef McCarthy to mount a challenge against McCorkindale.
However, there was one scare along the way.
Suffering from some slight grip issues on the run up the Mount, Anderson managed to avoid a crash into the outside wall at turn seven and regather control.
"That wasn't to plan," Anderson laughed.
"The rears started to go off and I had to try and soften the bars inside the car and had to drive it a little smoother to make it come back to me.
"But after that we had the safety car and we were able to cool them back down. I was able to charge after that."
The safety car came out when Super2 driver Nash Morris got his car buried in the sand on the final corner on lap eight, bringing the field back together for an exciting sprint home.
It was a brilliant bounce back result for Anderson after he finished sixth in Saturday's opening race, and the race two victory took him to second overall for the round.
Anderson was back behind the wheel of his own car after managing the team over the past three seasons and looked comfortable from the outset during practice.
After such a long time away from the driver's seat, and a lack of testing time before the weekend's opening round action, Anderson was thrilled to come away with a race win.
"It's even more satisfying to win because we'd done zero testing," he said.
"We were meant to do some last Friday but there was 20 to 40mm of rain so we didn't end up going. We came here with a good car with new components and it went really well."
Anderson's Falcon continued to find pace throughout the weekend and come Sunday the car was perfectly tuned.
"We were chasing some speed all weekend and we found it this morning in qualifying. We were baulked a little in qualifying, which could have put us forward a place or two, but the race was really good," he said.
"We had speed off the go and we were able to fight straight away. I was chasing Jon right up to the last minute and I got a good run down Conrod and I thought 'Well I'm not going to not take it'.
"The car was as best as it's been all weekend in that race, which is what you want. Second in the championship is a great place to be. We've got a fast car heading into round two."
Out at the head of the field, the Super2 race was taken out by Jordan Boys ahead of Tyler Everingham and Zak Best.
Following the first two races of the Super3 season McCorkindale leads the championship on 288.
Anderson sits second (252) with Brendan Strong (249) third.
The next round of the series will take place at Winton Raceway over May 29 and 30.
