WHEN Silk Cloud rounded the turn for home with a lead in Saturday night's Group 2 Pink Bonnet at Menangle her trainer Tony Higgs wasn't sure she'd stay focused since she had no horses ahead of her.

But the filly blew those concerns of the Bathurst trainer out of the water as she put the field to the sword in a dominant success, making her Higgs' first Group-level winner since Hannah McKenzie in 2002.
Silk Cloud ($3.70 joint favourite, Luke McCarthy) blitzed her closest rivals Martini Stride ($3.70 joint favourite, Anthony Butt) and Finery ($8.50, Will Rixon) by nearly 10 metres.
"It was amazing. I was actually apprehensive about taking her down there because she doesn't load and unload from the float real good and she's not the best traveller in the world," Higgs said.
"I ended up starting her and it ended up being happy days. I said to Luke the main thing was to try and not let her be exposed late because she'll prick her ears and look around and have a bit of a snooze.
"When he went to the front on the turn I thought 'Oh no' but to her credit, and Luke's, she kicked on and ran away from them."
Silk Cloud's winning mile rate was a flashy 1:53.5.
The Shadow Play x Modern Babe filly was a $13,000 purchase in last year's Gold Crown Yearling Sales, and won more than double that amount in Saturday's win.
Driver Luke McCarthy decided to pull Silk Cloud into the death seat after sitting two back in the running line and drew alongside leader Nelly Bigtime on the turn for home.
Martini Stride looked ready to launch a challenge against Silk Cloud from wider out but Higgs' filly was on a mission in the two-year-old fillies race.
Higgs said Silk Cloud is easily his most promising horse he's trained since his former NSW Sires Stakes and Gold Bracelet champion Hannah McKenzie.
"I've had some nice horses over the years and I've broken in some nice horses but she's right up there with them. She's looking very good," he said.
