Just before 7.30pm on Monday the Millthorpe brigade responded to a report of an out of control bushfire which, after arriving, they discovered to be a small fire being used to cook a meal with a camp oven on a private property.
On investigation it was determined the property owner did not have a permit for the small fire, which is required in the circumstances.

As per the RFS' available information, fires are permitted for cooking purposes only when in a permanently constructed fireplace or at a site surrounded by ground cleared of all combustible materials for a distance of at least two metres all around.
The Bush Fire Danger period runs from October 1 until March 31, with permits for fires are required until April 30. However, some permits are required throughout the year - for example, a fire permit is required at all times if a fire is likely to be dangerous to a building.
Permits are free to apply for by contacting local RFS control centres or Fire and Rescue NSW, with people also urged to take note of total fire bans or when no burn days are declared.
