A display of purple corflutes was set up in Kings Parade, featuring full-size pictures of Bathurst women and their thoughts on International Women's Day.
Represented in the display are:
- Anna Blackie (Triathlete)
- Marie Bourke (Advocate for women, volunteer counsellor, and support for women exiting the justice system)
- Selina Brandy (Works with Relationships Australia and is a strong Aboriginal role model)
- Tracey Callinan (Executive Director of Arts Out West)
- Laura Cole (Former youth deputy mayor and community activist)
- Karen Golland (Local Artists)
- Dr Jane Lawrence (One of the first female doctors to practice in Bathurst)
- Carole McDiarmid (Former director of school education)
- Zoe Peters (School Captain, youth mayor and sporting figure)
- Beth Pratley (Musical Director of Panorama Chorus)
- Kirstyn Schumacher (Works at S & S electrical)
- Kathy Sloan (One of the founders and secretary of Bathurst AFL Giants football club)
They were chosen by a panel that included councillors, council staff and representatives from community organisations.
The panel selected women from a diverse cross section of the community, who work in areas such as health, creative industries, sport, have helped build inclusive workplaces or work in traditionally male-dominated industries.
Mrs McDiarmid said it was a surprise to be nominated for the International Women's Day initiative, given that she has been retired for some time.
It's not the first time she's been acknowledged in this way. She was also included in the Bathurst 200 Peoplescape for the city's bicentenary celebrations in 2015.
Mrs McDiarmid appreciated both initiatives, particularly how the International Women's Day installation presented local women who could be role models for others in the community.
"It's a wonderful idea and it's great to be part of something that showcases women," she said.
The theme for International Women's Day 2021 was Choose to Challenge.
The women are all pictured with their hands raised to show they're joining in and are committed to choosing to challenge and call out inequality.
The installation will remain in place until March 12.
