Ken Barwick, principal of Bathurst High, who came up with the idea, said he was ecstatic with how the community had rallied to support Ronald McDonald House in Orange, which is a home away for home for sick kids and their families.
Wear Red Day, held on Thursday, began five years ago with just a handful of schools, but has continued to grow.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
Last year over 60 schools, pre-schools and businesses across the Central West joined in the spirit of the day by dressing up in red and making a gold coin donation to the cause.
Mr Barwick said he was receiving registrations right up until Thursday morning.
He thanked every single business and school who had thrown their support behind the day, and said he was hopeful of achieving the fundraising goal of $23,000.
He said he was especially proud of the efforts of Bathurst High, whose staff raised $1500 alone.
Coupled with donations from the students he was hopeful the school would reach $5,000.
Wear Red Day raises money for Ronald McDonald House Charities Orange and every cent raised helps keep their doors open, with all money raised staying locally.
