With the Bells Line of Road closed "indefinitely", the pressure is on to improve the safety and travel times for all vehicles now using the Great Western Highway.

A road tunnel under the upper Blue Mountains villages would not be subject to bushfires, rain, snow, ice, fog, windstorms or fallen trees.

Being a double tunnel, it wouldn't even be closed by an accident in the tunnel as a single-lane contra flow could be rapidly and temporarily implemented.

A tunnel would also significantly reduce travel times to and from the Central West.
