And now is the time to book it, but travel agents are asking people to book locally rather than online.
The federal government is spending $1.2 billion on a stimulus program to get Australians to spend up big on domestic travel to support the struggling sector.
With international travel not an option until October at the earliest, it makes sense to travel at home.
Thirteen regions are included in the program, which features half-price airfares on the nation's three major carriers, with 13 destinations to choose from.
Lisa Hall, owner of italktravel, said domestic travel is definitely booming, with people desperate to go having been stuck at home for so long.
"People are definitely wanting to go somewhere, though they are wary of border closures, so it does make it hard."

But she said the cheap flights around at the moment were definitely an incentive, though she said some areas accommodation was in high demand, due to the number of domestic tourists.
"For example Cable Beach, Broome is so popular you can't get accommodation there at the moment.
"Because no one is going overseas, some areas are really popular."
With the travel industry one of the hardest hit by COVID-19, Ms Hall reminded people of the importance of supporting local business.
"I know for a lot of people its habit to book (domestic travel) online, but when you book online the money is going out of the country.
"If you book with a travel agent, the money stays here and not only supports us but all the other jobs, like hotel staff as well," she said.
Ms Hall said the past 12 months for the travel industry had been heartbreaking, and definitely the most difficult in her 30-year career within the industry.
She said industry representatives had been in talks with the government to try and extend Job Keeper for the travel industry. The talks were rejected and she said many agents would struggle, or face closure.
