THAT sound you heard as a cold front elbowed its way into Bathurst on the weekend was the noise of 100 phones being activated to check on upcoming accommodation availability in Queensland.

The spring-in-autumn weather that the city had been enjoying this month came to an end on Saturday as normal transmission resumed on the tablelands.
It was 27 degrees a week ago, but was just 13 or so yesterday. And we were lucky to have struggled to that humble number.
IN NEWS AROUND BATHURST:
The weather is a conversation mainstay wherever you live, but it is a particularly popular subject in Bathurst - and for good reason.
Our four distinct seasons mark the progression of the year in a way that a more mild, less extreme climate does not.
They also provide a rhythm to our lives: from the anything-goes of the long days and abundant sunshine of January to the closed doors and early nights of June and July.
Our dizzying swing from minimums of -7 or -8 degrees in winter to tops of 39 or 40 in summer asks a lot of gardens (and humans), but it does provide a little something for everyone - from the person who likes to feel a sheen of sweat on their arms at 10am to the person who wants to spend the day by the heater with a good book.
Many a Bathurstian reckons their city would be perfect if the winter wasn't so brutal, but it's the brutality of the winter that makes the first sunny days of spring such a revelation.
Bathurst can be seen as shut-in and forbidding in the middle of the year, but it can also be seen as contemplative and quiet, taking a breath and having a rest at the behest of the climate.
The cold months mean the mowers can be put away for a while, the watering and pruning is no longer a concern, the television can be switched on at noon on a Saturday without a stab of guilt.
There's not a lot demanded of you when a weekend comes and goes and the temperature never gets into double figures - and that's all right, because there'll be plenty of weekends later on when the demands are plentiful.
The cold months in Bathurst can be a comfort with the right attitude and the right heating.
And if that's not your thing, there's always an extended trip to Queensland - where you might find another Bathurstian staying next door.
