The proposal of a third route across the Blue Mountains is worthy and real vision is definitely required.
The proposal, however, would require extensive road upgrades on the western side and push more traffic on the already congested southern Sydney (M5) route.
The shortest third route is one or a series of tunnels between Lapstone and Hartley connecting the existing road infrastructure either side of the mountains.
The shortcomings of the two existing over-the-mountain routes are apparent and proposals for their continued upgrade are shortsighted and will fail to address the future needs of the western region.
