From May 11, Dr Jack Holman will be running a weekly service every Tuesday for Bathurst customers requiring specialist equine and cattle vet services.
Dr Holman, who operates out of Mudgee Veterinary Hospital, said the service will commence with a series of routine health checks on animals requiring attention, with a goal to build up services as demand increases.
"The service will focus mainly on equine services, providing assistance with things such as powerfloat dentals, scoping, x-rays, tendon scans and reproductive work, and we have portable equipment on hand to help clients on the spot," he said.
"We've already built up rapport with the Bathurst Thoroughbred Racing Club, and we're starting to get in touch with harness racing and horse herbal clients as well."
"We do some cattle work on the side as well, tending to pregnancy-related issues and other relevant health concerns."
Dr Holman, who cut his teeth tending to horses and cattle on his family's 3500 acre property between Bathurst and Orange, said the service will aim to address a gap in the local market concerning large animal care.
"A dedicated equine vet will offer routine herd health where people don't have to travel because we've found over the last few years that owners have found it tough to get a vet to come to them," he said.
"Most Bathurst owners currently travel to either Orange or the Hawkesbury for equine vet services, so we're hoping to ease the strain on travel and give customers more choice."
Dr Holman hopes to expand services on a gradual basis, with an end goal to eventually open a full-time service in Bathurst.
"We hope to make this a full-time service in Bathurst within five years, so the plan is to gradually build relationships within the local community and slowly up our imprint," he said.
"There's potential to eventually expand into emergency after-hours work as well, as it's also an area of high demand, but it will all depend on interest."
Dr Holman will operate every Tuesday from 8am to 6pm. To enquire about his services, contact the Mudgee Veterinary Hospital on 63722105.
