The session, held at the Bathurst Senior Citizens Centre, was hosted by Envirocom in conjunction with the NSW Seniors Festival.
Envirocom environmental consultant Lydia Mottram, who led the discussion, said the session was designed for seniors to air any questions about the role of recycling and waste management in the local community.
"We often find seniors are already well versed with the recycling and waste management process, so this is an opportunity for them to have all their questions answered," Ms Mottram said.
"At the end of the day, recycling can be quite a confusing process for everyone to understand, as it's constantly changing, which is why it's important to keep people informed with the latest information."
The session addressed topics such as the role of each household bin, how waste can be reused and repurposed and what can and cannot be recycled.
"Soft plastics in particular are a big contaminant among recycling bins in Bathurst, but there are specialised bins at Coles and Woolworths to recycle such items through the REDcycle program," Ms Mottram said.
"It's beneficial for members of the community to avoid wastage of unnecessary plastic where possible, and it's encouraging to hear senior citizens interested in how the recycling process works based on the number of questions."
