The consultant for the master plan has proposed a numbers of changes be implemented across the CBD, including regular rows of street trees, raised pedestrian crossings, four-way crossings at CBD intersections, the targeted creation of shared zones, and a speed limit of 40km/h in the CBD with truck limitations.
A reconfiguration of parking in Russell Street has been proposed, which includes parallel parking, a new row of 90-degree all-day parking spaces, and street trees and parking medians interspersed between parking spaces.
Councillor Warren Aubin criticised the suggestion, particularly for the block between William and Bentinck streets.
"In that block, there is just no room for any of that ... that block is a lost cause as far as I'm concerned with that style of arrangement," he said.
The master plan also proposes another bus stop opposite the existing one in Howick Street, across from the Telstra building, which again drew criticism.
Cr Aubin said it was a "ridiculous" idea, while mayor Bobby Bourke called it "stupid".
Cr Alex Christian also slammed the idea to reduce the speed limit in the CBD.
"Everyone's just slowing us down and I cannot stand it," he said.
The master plan is currently on public exhibition and people are invited to provide their feedback before a final version is adopted.
