But ultimately, there'd been only one thing stopping Arthur naming Jakob at five-eighth against the Warriors on Sunday.

"There's only one (reason I wouldn't pick him) and that's because of his surname," Arthur said.

"And that wouldn't be right."

Arthur had the chance to debut Jakob four weeks ago when Dylan Brown was first suspended but chose not to.

This time though with Will Smith also out injured, he could find no further reason.

"The assistant coaches and everyone at our club and the player would have played him five weeks ago," Arthur said.

"It's probably an obvious choice straight after the game, a couple of boys said put him in.

"He's earned that right through how he handled himself in the process."

Arthur on Saturday refused to bow to the wishes of Parramatta players when he knocked back the chance to present Jakob his maiden NRL jersey.

Instead he let Mitch Moses have that honour after the halfback and Clint Gutherson also delivered the news on Tuesday that he'd been picked.

But in a teary video session, Arthur told his firstborn that he was proud of him after having coached him in club football for Rouse Hill since his primary school days.

"We always talk about milestones (the day before the game) and that's part of my job. So I spoke about his milestone which is his debut," Arthur said.

"It's good that I feel comfortable enough in this group that I got emotional.

"I gave him a cuddle, I'm proud of him."

Few other coaches in the game's history would know the emotions Arthur went through.

The pair will become just the 11th father-son coach-player combination in the game's 113-year history, and even fewer have handed out the debuts.

The Arthurs are just the second pair this century to go through the process, with Shane and Kyle Flanagan also experiencing the same challenges in 2018.

"I was probably thinking about doing it two or three weeks earlier," Shane Flanagan told AAP.

"My assistant Steve Price was pushing me to do it earlier.

"There was a bit of hesitation around not picking him because he's Kyle Flanagan, and not because of form.

"The main thing is they've got to that position not because of any influence I have had or Brad has had.

"They have got there because they have done a lot of work. You have to reward that."

Meanwhile Arthur Jr got at least one training session in on Saturday morning in Brisbane, after being denied entry into the team's bubble in Sydney after playing NSW Cup last week.

But Arthur insisted that would not faze the youngster.

"He's calm and controlled. He's like his mum so he's nothing like me," Brad said.
