Headspace Bathurst's LGBTQIA+ Youth Group put forward the idea to recognise the day, encourage discussions about IDAHOBIT.

Running since 1991, the initiative is not only a day to show support for the LGBTQIA+ community, but also a day to educate people, reducing stigma and discrimination.

"IDAHOBIT is a day to raise awareness of how it affects the queer community and how if affects their day-to-day life and just get a bit of positive talk going around the community," headspace Bathurst community engagement officer Isobelle Strickland said.

"Discrimination is something that, if you're part of the community, you've experienced at one point or another."

Discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community in Australian culture has become almost natural with school-based education a great step forward in changing this, Ms Strickland said.

"We did link up with Kelso High because their LGBTQIA+ group organised their own event selling cupcakes, and we went down and passed out information about our services and to let them know that headspace is there if they ever need the support," Ms Strickland said.

"I think that the schools starting these groups or having these groups is amazing. It's really good that they're supporting it, it's allowing kids to feel comfortable and confident.

"Even if you don't figure it out, or you never know, or you don't have a label, that's fine. Just allowing them to have that conversation is a safe place is important."
