When Bathurst trainer-driver Mat Rue landed a treble at the Dubbo Harness Racing Club's meeting on Sunday it included success in the Remembering AD Turnbull Pace (1,720 metres).
While Rue said he did not know the late The Lagoon trainer-driver as well as other members of his family, he has the utmost respect for the man they called 'AD'.
"Obviously it was extra special winning that, he was just a legend and a stalwart of the game," Rue said.
"Obviously I'm a lot closer to Steve and his grandkids than I was with him, but what a legacy."
It was a three-year-old called Classical Music who took out the race, posting her first win since joining Rue's stable this year.
After going from barrier eight as the $2.70 favourite, the Bettors Delight x Top Tempo filly settled one out and three back.
With around 450m to go Rue worked her three wide and she quickly made up ground, balancing at the top of the home straight in second.
She hit the front and held off late challenges from Royal Feeling ($51) and Ripponlea ($8.50) to win by a half-neck in a 2:01.0 mile rate.
"I wasn't really surprised she won, she had been working towards that win. She'd only had two starts for me and ran a second and a third and both time she had little circumstances work against her, so we were pretty happy with her leading into it and expecting that she could win it," Rue said.
"I think she's a handy bush type, I don't think she'll be able to win in any races with real value so to speak, but as far as just racing around the bush, I think there's some improvement left in her over the next month.
"She's an honest little type."
Rue's other wins for the meeting came aboard six-year-old Goodtime Hero ($3.40) and debutant Marsden Heights ($2.20 favourite).
Rue was not the only Bathurst driver to find success, with John O'Shea also steering three winners. He got the job done on Geoff Lawson's Alta Downs ($3.40), Andrew Ward's Kempley Princess ($4.60) and Barry Lew's Great Presence ($1.35 favourite).
