Transport for NSW (TfNSW) is to be commended for introducing new bus routes in regional cities.
There are obvious benefits for those who rely on public transport, but it is to be hoped that those who need to travel to the CBD will take the bus rather than drive.
If enough people do this we won't need to build a multi-million dollar, multi-storey car park, but instead could invest in tree planting in the CBD and developing the old TAFE building into a performing arts centre.
This is the age old concept of "opportunity cost": researching all the options and choosing the one which will return the most benefit.
It is also to be hoped that TfNSW will look at the opportunity cost associated with the proposed road tunnels in the Blue Mountains.
Would spending $1 to $2 billion on upgrading rail infrastructure be better than spending $10 to $15 billion to move congestion on the Great Western Highway from Blackheath to Medlow and the other mountain villages?
The two "Bathurst Bullets" have been well patronised even though their speed is restricted by 100-year-old track alignment.
If there were six or more "Bullets" every day making the trip to Sydney in just over three hours, people would give up stopping and starting at the potential 25 sets of traffic lights between Medlow and Glenbrook.
A change of thinking is all that is needed.
