Council contacted the owner of a property in PJ Moodie Drive to advise the owners of a leak in their water service.
After receiving the notice, the owner of the property arranged for the leak to be repaired.
The leak was found on the opposite side of the street to the property, in an area maintained by council.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
According to a report from the director of Corporate Services and Finance, Aaron Jones, the owner believed council was responsible for the leak.
"The owner reported that damage to the service appeared to have been caused by a mower, in an area that is maintained by council," he said.
A total of $9368.17 in water charges and interest were raised as a result of the leak.
It's a stark difference from the property owner's normal bill.
On average, for the same billing period for this property, an amount of $323.87 would normally be raised.
With the bill being so high, a write-off of $9044.30 was requested.
As the amount of the write-off exceeded the general manager's delegation, the matter had to be determined at Wednesday night's council meeting.
Mr Jones recommended that council write off the charges as per the request, and councillors voted in support of the recommendation.
In an effort to reduce the risk of damage recurring, council staff have recently completed works to the service, including the relocation of the water meter to the property's side of the road.
