A driver was clocked travelling almost double the speed limit at Bathurst's Mount Panorama on Sunday afternoon and, after being caught, told officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command 'I thought it was a race track'.

At 3.36pm on Sunday officers from the North West Highway Patrol detected the vehicle travelling at 119 kilometres an hour, in a 60 zone, during regular speed enforcement operations.

After offering officers their explanation the driver was issued an infringement notice for exceed speed more than 45km/h over the speed limit, which carried a fine of $2,520 and six demerit points as well.

The driver's licence was suspended for six months on the spot and confiscated, while the vehicle's registration plates were seized as well, for three months.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Command sent a reminder to the public that Mount Panorama is not a race track, but rather a public road with residential and commercial properties, with pedestrians often on foot as well.
It only becomes a race track when it is closed to the public and authorised to be as such.
