According to media reports, the separatist forces said they had suffered four deaths and five injuries northwest of the rebel stronghold of Donetsk after government forces opened fire.
But Ukraine's military said the ceasefire was initially violated by the separatists when they deployed mortars and anti-tank fire near Krasnohorivka.
It was impossible to independently verify which version of the story was closer to the truth.
Pro-Russian forces have controlled the Donetsk and Luhansk regions along the Russian border since 2014.
According to UN data, the lingering conflict has been responsible for 13,000 deaths.
There have been 90 deaths, including civilians, this year.
