Crafternoon group member Fiona Howle has called it the "crochet Christmas tree community project" and is amazed by the community support the group has received.

"We've already got, I think, 60 contributors ... people from all over the place have contributed to it," she said.

"It has been, truly, a really heartfelt, passionate, exciting community project and we can't wait to get it up."

The idea was sparked after one of the Crafternoon group members saw a crocheted Christmas tree on the Pinterest social media site and suggested that it could be the group's next project.

"When I saw it, I said 'that's not so impossible' because I'm a bit of an engineer, so I thought I could make the frame and I know lots of ladies would love to crochet and wouldn't it be a beautiful thing to do for Bathurst Winter Festival," Ms Howle said.

"So I approached council and they eventually said 'yeah, we think we could fit it in'."

Once the group had approval, Crafternoon member Sarah Fairhurst took to Facebook encouraging anyone who liked to crochet to send in their "granny squares".

After word of the project spread, Ms Howle likened the process to a rapidly growing snowball.

"We didn't even have to push hard; we just made a little ball, tipped it down the hill and it snowballed into this and they all rolled in like snow - it was really beautiful to see happening," she said.

"Suddenly it's like Christmas in my letterbox and I'm getting all these squares being deposited from all around Bathurst."

After receiving a large number of granny squares, Crafternoon members have been stitching the squares together to form two large triangles that will hug the frame of the two-and-a-half-metre tall Christmas tree.

If possible, the group would love to turn the one tree into a small forest for next year's festival.
