Transport for NSW has conceded a sensor fault has been discovered with the traffic lights at the intersection of Kendall Avenue (the Great Western Highway) and Havannah Street on the eastern entrance to Bathurst.
The Western Advocate has been told the problem is at its worst late at night and in the early morning when motorists travelling into Bathurst from Kelso can be left waiting several minutes for the light to turn when there is barely another vehicle on the road.
Some nights the wait is so long that one driver said she had seen a number of frustrated truck drivers drive through the red light after ensuring it was safe to do so.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
In response to questions from the Western Advocate, Transport for NSW director west Alistair Lunn said the fault had been identified and crews were due on-site this week to start fixing it.
"Transport for NSW is working with Bathurst Regional Council to ensure the traffic light on Havannah Street is operating correctly as a matter of priority," Mr Lunn said.
"Transport for NSW technicians have carried out initial testing and detected an intermittent fault with the traffic light sensor.
"Havannah Street is a local road, under the care and control of Bathurst Regional Council, and Transport for NSW is liaising with council to prioritise the road repairs required to repair the traffic light sensor.
"As an interim solution, Transport for NSW technicians have amended the phasing of the traffic lights to reduce the waiting time for motorists on all approaches from one minute to 25 seconds."
Mr Lunn said a new modem was due to be installed at the site this week to "further assist with upgrading the operation of the traffic lights".
The Western Advocate has been told the lights have been a problem for late-night travellers since last October.
