The illumination, entitled Colour Riot, will feature Bathurst street artist Sven [Stephen Rogers] beamed up onto the building as he crafts a dazzling graffiti mural full of colour
Sven said the mural was composed on a five-and-a-half metre tall black wall at PCYC Bathurst, with ESEM Projects filming the process, including Sven's movements, for Keystone's illumination.
"The PCYC was an ideal location because of the scale of the artwork, as we needed somewhere that matched the dimensions of Keystone," he said.
"I used spray paint for the entire design, and the end frames of the illumination will actually bring the artwork to life; all will be revealed on Saturday."
Sven's illumination will run on a 10-and-a-half minute loop, with local musician Rob Shannon providing an emotive soundscape to accompany the piece.
"He [Sven] sent me a playlist featuring the music he was listening to while creating the mural; a mix of reggae, jazz and hip hop; so I used this as a basis to form a layered, atmospheric track that develops alongside the mural," Shannon said.
"The track is essentially a sprawling, 10-and-a-half minute hip-hop odyssey with booming bass, I can't wait to see the two work together."
Sven said the PCYC staff were very supportive of the installation, and thanked Bathurst Regional Council and Bathurst Regional Art Gallery [BRAG] for thinking of him in regards to the Winter Festival's organisation.
"BRAG director Sarah Gurich in particular has been instrumental in linking local artists with ESEM Projects, and it's great to see the illuminations become more collaborative each year," he said.
"Since moving to Bathurst in 2019, I've had a resolve to produce work that positively add to the community's visual aesthetic."
In addition to PCYC, Sven has had street at commissioned at Macquarie Plaza and, more recently, Kelso Community Hub.
He also staged a pop-up exhibition in the former Belly's Bikes store in February.
