I have now been part of Bathurst for over 40 years and resident for well over 20, but I have never seen the council in worse shape than at present.
I have reached a stage where current activities have forced me to take a stand to protect and advance the city which is now my adopted home.
I fully support Stephen Birrell and the "Future Bathurst" organisation.
Stephen has done wonderful things with the old Tremain's Mill. We now have a restored pub, a delightful Keppel streetscape, a new popular community green space, a Milling Museum on the way and many other exciting developments yet to come.
Stephen acquired the mill just six years ago and has made an incredible contribution to this city.
Bathurst Regional Council has had the old TAFE building now for some eight years and has achieved virtually nothing.
Council has been talking about the "Town Square" concept for many years, but has not done much to advance it. Many workshops and community consultations have taken place over the years, but have achieved little.
Council has given scant regard to the Allen Jack + Cottier Architects report.
Council's focus appears mainly to promote fast-food outlets which it claims as economic development, but which simply destroy the local cafes.
We need the "Town Square" to proceed urgently and provide a precinct where citizens and tourists can relax and enjoy the beauty of our potentially historic and elegant city.
Unfortunately, this is unlikely to happen with this present council.
