The election followed the resignation of councillor Bobby Bourke as mayor, who stepped down from the city's top job after ABC's 7.30 program aired a bombshell report alleging he was involved in a blackmail attempt against Cr Jacqui Rudge.

He denies the allegations and remains a councillor.

It seemed inevitable that Cr North, who has served a record 11 terms a deputy mayor, would be the one to replace him.

In the days leading up to the election, it was clear he had at least five votes, with councillors Bourke, Warren Aubin, Alex Christian and Monica Morse all confirming he had their support.

No one came forward publicly to announce they would challenge him for the mayor's job, and it was confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that there were no other candidates.

As such, Cr North was elected unanimously.

He said he was "very humbled and very proud" to become mayor of Bathurst.

"It's an enormous job to have, I really care about this community, and to be the mayor of this city and the people I care about so much is an absolute honour," he said.

With Cr North being elevated to mayor, a new deputy had to be elected.

Cr Morse was the only one to put her hand up and was elected unopposed.

It's not the first time councillors North and Morse have served in the city's top jobs together.

Cr Morse was elected as mayor in 2012, holding the position for a year, while Cr North served as her deputy.

Cr North said last week that Cr Morse was the first one to call him to offer her support if he ran as mayor.

"I hadn't even got to her, and other councillors have contacted me and said they were supporting me, but Cr Morse was the first one to say she felt I would be the ideal person to do the job and I really thanked her for that," he said.

"We've had a long relationship and a good relationship, and it meant a lot to me coming from Cr Morse. Many years ago I was actually her deputy and helped her get appointed [to mayor], so it was very, very nice of her to say those nice words."

Although the mayoral election is over, councillors will continue to deal with the fallout of the allegations on 7.30.

They will hold an extraordinary meeting on Thursday afternoon to determine a notice of no confidence in Cr Bourke as a councillor.
