The Bureau of Meteorology reported that the mercury had dropped to -5.4 around 7.10am at its official weather station at the Bathurst Airport on Thursday morning, with the temperature reportedly feeling like a freezing -8.1.

The mercury in Bathurst hasn't fallen that low since August 2019, when the temperature dropped to -5.5 on the sixth day of that month, which was only days before widespread snow fell across the Central West region.

The temperature did not go above zero until almost 10am and frost was still lingering in shadowy areas until well after 11am.

Unless they were locked up in garages, many Bathurst motorists were greeted to frozen cars too.

Window experts have advised people to use lukewarm water to clear ice from windscreens and mirrors, but motorists are not recommended to use boiling water, as this can lead to cracks.

Another helpful tip is to use a plastic ice scraper, a soft brush or even an old EFTPOS card to help scratch away the ice.

To avoid frost all together, it's recommended to cover the windscreen in an old sheet or blanket.

Bathurst is now expected to be hit by a number of wet days, with forecasts indicating anywhere between one to five millimetres can fall on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Bathurst has already had 53.2 millimetres of rain throughout the month, still below the total rainfall in July last year, which was 79.8 millimetres.
