Maskne is the term given for the congestion and breakouts that occur on your face in the area where we are wearing face masks, and Karla McDiarmid, from Macquarie Day Spa, says it's becoming more prevalent.

"On our skin under the mask it becomes its own 'micro climate' with sweat, dirt ,oil and makeup (if being worn) all combining to make a delicious cocktail in a warm environment that bacteria loves to live in and add the friction from the mask this can turn into acne 'maskne' " Ms McDiarmid explained.

"The best things to do to prevent 'maskne' is to use a new mask often or have several masks on rotation in the wash to prevent the dirt and oil building up in the mask and on your skin..

"If you are exercising we find people who are sweating a lot are noticing maskne even more than those who are not exercising .

"We recommend taking two to three spare masks to the gym with you and as you are sweating change over to a new mask often.

"It's great to have antibacterial skin wipes with you also at the gym / outside fitness / sports to wipe over your skin to prevent further breakouts from forming.

"At home it is recommended to be cleansing your skin morning or night."
