While COVID-19 restrictions mean Miller can't be with Nicholas in Japan, she has been there with him on the very long road to selection.

They've competed at events such as the Australian Road Nationals together, they've trained alongside each other at times and they've always supported each other.

Just as Nicholas, a star para-cyclist, is proud and excited to represent Australia at his third Games, Miller is proud and excited that he will do so.

"It's really exciting because it's taken us just so long to get to this point, and that's the feedback the all athletes have been giving ... how hard it was to wait this long to get there, now it's actually happening it's really exciting," she said.

"He actually had to leave Bathurst a week and a half early because of the border closure with Queensland. They were doing their staging camp for cycling in Brisbane and he got an hour's notice to pack up all his stuff and get to the airport.

"It meant he was able to get on the track and be part of that team environment before they flew out, which a lot of other people in different sports haven't been able to do, so that's a positive thing."

Though the couple have been apart in the build up and will be again for the duration of the Games, they are still in regular contact.

"The technology is great in being able to face time and things like that and the time zone with Tokyo makes it easier as well only being an hour behind us in Australia," Miller said.

"I think in general it's great for the athletes to still be able to interact with their families, like some of them have kids, it's great for them to feel part of it even though they're away."

Nicholas will not be part of the opening ceremony on Tuesday as he will begin his Paralympic campaign on Thursday.

He will begin with the August 26 individual pursuit - an event in which he's the reigning gold medallist - then follow with the road time trial on August 31 and road race on September 2.

Miller will be watching on from Bathurst.

"We've done this a few times now watching him race overseas on live stream, it gets very loud," she said.

"Dave likes to build into the race and I feel we build with him with our volume. It's always so nerve-racking to watch but you've got to trust he knows what he's doing in terms of pacing himself into the event.

"I love watching him race but yeah, it's just very concerning which way it's going to go. As long as he's done the best race he can do, you can't ask for anything more.

"It's been a really difficult preparation and think it's made it anyone's game this year moreso than in the past - anything can happen at a Paralympics and I think this time around it will been even moreso due to lockdowns and restrictions.

"I think whoever wins is going to be the one who made the most of things in lockdown ... he's really excited and a bit of nerves as well, fortunately being his third Paralympics he knows how things work."
