Descendant Cathie Morant is pushing to have the name added to recognise her relative's service to a South Australian colonial unit during the Boer War.

A formal submission has been made by lawyer and author James Unkles, who recently argued strongly for Bathurst to retain Lieutenant Peter Handcock's name on the city's memorial in Kings Parade.

Mr Handcock and Mr Morant were both executed in 1902 for the murder of several Boer prisoners-of-war, though Mr Unkles has argued that the pair did not receive a fair trial.

In supporting the inclusion of Mr Morant on the Adelaide memorial, Bathurst RSL Sub-Branch president David Mills said such memorials "acknowledge service to our country".

"Inclusion does not judge, nor should it judge that service," he writes.

"To adopt a judgmental attitude towards memorials has the potential to lead to unwarranted removal of names from memorials across the country."

The Bathurst RSL Sub-Branch has also argued against Mr Handcock's name being removed from the Kings Parade memorial, saying history should not be deleted or rewritten.
