VACCINATION is essential to the bumper Bathurst 1000 going ahead in December, councillors say.
The six-day motor sport event will combine the Bathurst 1000 and the Bathurst International and feature10 categories of racing.
Plans for the event are still being determined, but at this stage the intention will be to hold it with spectators, who would also be able to camp at Mount Panorama.
The organisers have said they will work closely with health authorities to ensure the event complies with all health orders at the time.
Bathurst councillors have said they want to see everyone fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to ensure the safety of all event goers and the Bathurst community.
Deputy mayor Monica Morse urged people to get vaccinated now.
"People must get vaccinated. I can't understand why people don't get vaccinated. We all vaccinate our children, our babies, we all think it's a good idea they get all that done before they go to school. I can't see why people wouldn't get this done," she said.
"When we get our babies vaccinated, we don't ask whether it's this sort of vaccine or that sort of vaccine, we do it because we care for our children, so let's get it all done."
Councillor Warren Aubin is of a similar opinion, saying that being fully vaccinated with two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine should be a prerequisite to attend.
"I think it should be implemented. In saying that, everyone should be getting vaccinated anyway so we can get rid of this bloody thing," he said.
The last time the Bathurst 1000 was held, the crowd was limited to just 4000 people per day. For an event that is known to attract a crowd in excess of 200,000 over four days, that was a huge blow.
Cr Aubin expects the crowd will likely still be capped, but that the number would be much higher than the 4000 per day limit.
"They're talking about mid-October getting the state open, so I imagine six weeks after that you'll be looking at getting groups together and outdoor activities happening," he said.
