Turnbull's former Gold Crown Gold Consolation winner Pas De Cheval ($1.65 favourite) had it all her own way in the NSW Breeders Challenge 2YO Fillies Heat (1,660 metres), leading the full trip in a dominant win.
It was a similar story for Baxter Red ($2.30 equal favourite, Mitch Turnbull) in the NSW Breeders Challenge 2YO Colts and Geldings Heat (1,660m), cruising around to hold the advantage from the inside gate all the way.
Pas De Cheval swept across from gate six to take up the lead on the opening lap.
When Steve Turnbull asked his filly to go she easily gapped the field by five metres before straightening for home.
He gave her one flick with the whip and that was all that was needed as she cruised home in a 1:59.4 mile rate ahead of Africana ($34, Michael Muscat) and stablemate Steph ($9.50, Mitch Turnbull).
"I didn't know how I'd go with getting to the front but I gave it a quick go and luckily they let me lead," Turnbull said.
"She relaxed beautifully and sprinted quickly at the end."
Turnbull claimed four of the top five spots in the colts and geldings race.
Baxter Red was able to relax well before the finish line after Mitch Turnbull built up a handy break at the top of the straight.
Bernie Hewitt's Promising ($6.50) finished well for second and Saint Veran ($2.30 equal favourite, Amanda Turnbull) rounded out the placings.
There was a break back to Bettor Keppel ($21, Nathan Turnbull) and Allstarzzz Frankie ($10, Steve Turnbull) in fourth and fifth.
"He's always been a tough horse and a very tall horse. He was a bit leggy as a younger two-year-old and now he's putting it more and more together," Turnbull said of his winner.
"A little bit of speed is coming with that toughness as well. That's probably the first time he's drawn decently in his whole career, and he did make it to the [Gold] Crown [Final] so he's always showed us a little bit."
Turnbull said while there's no current super star in his batch of six runners who contested the heats, it's a very talented two-year-old group he's got on his hands.
"They're all nice horses and I wouldn't say they are stars but they're really good. I couldn't ask for a better team of young ones," he said.
"Back in the old days they'd be super stars but they just keep improving every year. They've all won a few races and racing really well."
