Sargent's debut single, 'Move On', will be his first as a solo artist, after releasing a bunch of singles last year with duo West of Town [alongside friend and fellow musician Ben Rudgley].
Now based in Rockhampton, where he works as a radio announcer for Hit Central Queensland, Sargent said music has continued as his core passion outside work.
"'Move On' was essentially written in three different places: I started writing it last year when I was still in Bathurst, then worked on in a little bit when I moved to Deniliquin early this year for work, and finally finished it up here in 'Rocky'," he said.
"So its come together in three different locations, and has certainly drawn inspiration from each."
Sargent said 'Move On' draws inspiration from the breakdown of a relationship, but stressed the song is open-ended and can be interpreted in a number of ways.
"It's a break-up song about coming to terms with that circumstance, but the idea of 'moving on' can also apply to leaving a toxic situation like a bad job, abusive person or negative frames of mind," he said.
"I'm truly eager to hear how different listeners interpret it, as I'm confident a lot can be drawn from it."
Sargent said the song, produced independently, takes sound queues from two of his favourite artists: Sir Elton John and Billy Joel, both whom are well-renowned for their sincere, piano-driven ballads.
In addition to forming one half of West of Town, Sargent also honed his radio identity in Bathurst, initially through a stint at 2BS/B-Rock and later through his own podcast, The Convo, which he's continued this year.
"My plan is to write and perform as much music as possible in the coming months outside of my radio commitments," he said.
"Music is good for the soul, and I'd be lost without it."
