BCCAN has put the call out to members of the Bathurst community to gather support in sending a message to Calare MP Andrew Gee about a need to support Independent MP Zali Steggall's Climate Action Bill, to be tabled in parliament on October 18.
Ms Steggall, who represents the Warringah electorate in Sydney's Northern Beaches, notably won the seat at the last federal election from former prime minister Tony Abbott, a noteworthy sceptic of climate change policy.
BCCAN president Jack Fry said it's absolutely crucial the federal government commit to greater climate action for the benefit of the world's future.
"We need to send a message to Mr Gee about the importance of taking this bill seriously, as well as the importance of Prime Minister Scott Morrison in attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow on November 12," Mr Fry said.
"If Australia doesn't commit to a strong stance on climate action, such as net zero carbon emissions by 2050 [at a minimum, we'd prefer a 2030 target], it could be too late to save the planet from climate catastrophe."
"We have six to eight years to make a difference; the time to act is now, though really, action should've started 20 years ago."
