A large amount of the players who were in that 2021-22 under 14s unit which lost just one of its six Central West games, will be stepping up to under 16s this season so Innes was seen as a good fit.
The coach and players alike will face a new kind of challenge.
"The 16s had a tough season last year because there was only one round and they only played two games, but this season we've made it more of a zone competition than a district one," Bathurst District Junior Cricket Association president Steve Cain said. "So this year in the under 16s we've got Lachlan, Dubbo, Orange, Mudgee, Bathurst so that will be a lot better for them.
"Probably half the under 14s team have graduated into the 16s, there's not many left from the 16s team last year. So I'm really happy Greg Innes is going to coach that team."
The under 16s had their trial last Sunday at Eglinton's Cubis Park and Cain said players, coaches and selectors were delighted to be able to work together once more now the COVID-19 lockdown has been lifted.
"It is fantastic we are going to be able to get going again," he said.
"It has been frustrating for the kids I think because they are so used to being together in groups at training, so even just to get the 20 of them together on Sunday, you could see they were just so excited to be there."
The under 12s and under 14s trials followed this week.
The under 12s, who will be coached by Andrew Larnach with assistance from Cain and Scott Traves, will be part of a four-team competition which includes Orange, Dubbo and Mudgee.
The Bathurst under 14s, who will be coached by Matt Stephen, will play those same three opponents as well as a Central West girls outfit.
"We were going to put an all Bathurst girls team in but there wasn't quite enough girls for that so we opened it up to the Central West," Cain said.
The junior representative season starts on November 7.
