While not traditionally an occasion widely celebrated in Australia, All Hallows' Eve has picked up steam in recent years with more and more parties and community events taking place to team with the terrifyingly terrific theme.
From a retail perspective, it's one of the busiest times of the year for local costume and party supplies business Cosventure, who never fails to keep a scary selection of merchandise on standby for customers.
"There's definitely a lot of interest in Halloween this year, everyone wants to get out and have an excuse to enjoy themselves," Cosventure owner Katherine Palma said.
"Many people are preferring to host smaller parties at home rather than attending larger community events as they're still erring on the side of caution given the events of recent months."
Every year at Halloween, there's always a particular element of current popular culture that inspires people's costume choices and Ms Palma said this year is no exception, with the popular Netflix series Squid Game a regular point of inquiry.
"It's such a popular show at the moment, and so many people have asked about it; it's like two years ago when everyone wanted to dress up as Joaquin Phoenix's characterisation of The Joker," she said.
"But surprisingly, uniforms have also been popular; police, nurses and doctors have been in greater demand than usual; it might be a reflection on the times we're living in.
"Then you've got the usual favourites, such as scary clowns, vampires and devils, they never fail to attract interest from customers."
Ms Palma said Halloween is popular in the sense in invites people to celebrate something radically different from everyday life.
"Halloween is quite possibly Cosventure's busiest week of the year, there's a lot of people in town who love to embrace a different side of themselves," she said.
"And as it's the first special occasion people are set to celebrate post-lockdown, I think it'll be a busier week than ever, so I'm really looking forward to it."
Cosventure is situated at 73 George Street.
