This was a very disappointing outcome for the festival committee, which consists of nine local community groups who had worked conscientiously to produce a spectacular inaugural festival that pumped $375,000 into the local economy.
I wish to acknowledge publicly, and widely, that Stuart Driver (candidate for Bathurst Regional Council), took it upon himself to solicit donations from the business community to support the festival.
Mr Driver is not associated in any way with the Festival of Bells or its committee and took this action out of the goodness of his heart, and a strong sense of community.
A week later, Mr Driver announced on radio that he had secured funding from Family First Bank in the sum of $5000 and this announcement was confirmed a few days after that by Stuart Pearson, the founder and convenor of the Festival of Bells.
When the paperwork is formally approved by all parties, there will be an official engagement where press and media will be invited to attend. But before that happens, I would personally like to express my appreciation and gratitude for Stuart Driver playing the crucial role securing this magnificent donation, single-handedly.
Stuart Pearson, founder and convenor, Festival of Bells, Bathurst
