The Upper Macquarie County Council is the weeds authority for the council areas of Bathurst, Blayney, Lithgow and Oberon.

Bathurst Regional Council is able to have two members on the council and the election for those positions was held last Wednesday.

Usually there is only enough interest to fill the two positions, but this time three councillors had nominated themselves: Ben Fry, Ian North and Warren Aubin.

As such, a formal election had to be held, which included a secret ballot and preferential voting.

With three first preferences votes each, councillors Fry and North were elected as the members of the Upper Macquarie County Council.

It's Cr Fry's first opportunity to represent Bathurst, but for Cr North it was a return to the position he has held for around 10 years.

He was eager to be on the council again, after helping to turn it around to be one of the most reputable weeds authorities in the state.

"It's been a labour of love. When I got onto it, I think it was over 10 years ago, it was a county council that just wasn't performing as it should and it's been many years work, a lot of work by the councillor members and the general mangers that have come on, to turn it into the number one weeds authority in the state," Cr North said.

"It's something that I'm very proud of."

He has served the last four years as chairman and hopes he can be returned to that position to continue what he had started.

"I'd like to and I'd like to think the deputy chair Andrew McKibbin, from Oberon, would stay in his position," he said.

"It was a great combination, we worked really well.

"Andrew McKibbin and the other members, especially the last four years, have been tremendous in continuing the improvement process.

"... We've achieved a lot, but we've still got a hell of a lot more to go."
