Early on Tuesday morning an air quality alert was issued for the Central Tablelands, with the reading for Bathurst in the 'poor' category.
But, as the day progressed the city was slowly swallowed up by the dust and the air quality alert was lifted to 'hazardous'.
"Everyone, especially people with heart of lung disease, should avoid outdoor exertion and stay inside as much as possible," an alert from the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment said.
"If you have symptoms rest and use your reliever medicine. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice."
Also on Tuesday, many Western Advocate readers headed outdoors to take photos of the dusty scenes.
