Former Unions NSW assistant secretary Chris Christodoulou is set to become the new CEO of Greenacres Disability Services. The long-time trade unionist, who announced he was stepping down from his position on Thursday, will take on the role with the not-for-profit organisation in September. The 53-year-old, who has been on the Greenacres board for 18 months, said the job was a good fit, given his background in advocating for disabled workers’ rights. ‘‘It’s something I’ve always been interested in; I helped set up a supported wage system and worked to improve rights for people with disabilities in the ’90s,’’ he said. ‘‘When I finished my work with the Illawarra Venues Authority [now Venues NSW], I wanted to give something back to the community and the Greenacres board was happy to have me; it’s great to now take on a different challenge.’’ Union battler Chris Christodoulou signs off He conceded walking away from his traditional union work had been a difficult decision but said he was looking forward to a less confrontational role. ‘‘I did have a protective role in the trade union but it could be very combative,’’ he said. ‘‘This is very different; it’s a much more positive space but it’s still about improving people’s lives, particularly those who are most vulnerable. ‘‘As the national disability insurance scheme comes in, there are going to be a lot of changes; I’d love to see Wollongong be more inclusive for people with disabilities.’’ Greenacres executive chairman Richard Young said Mr Christodoulou’s passion for workers’ rights would put him in good stead in his new career. ‘‘He’s got the drive, skills, determination and desire to lead Greenacres,’’ he said. ‘‘I know Chris will bring his union background, spending years and years fighting for workers’ rights, to his new position; he’s always been passionate about rights for people with disabilities.’’
