UnitingCare state executive director Harry Herbert said it was time refugees were no longer used as political footballs.
“Dealing with people who are fleeing from wars is an age-old problem and we should not pretend there is an easy solution,” Reverend Herbert said.
“The Bathurst Refugee Support Group is doing tremendous work to raise awareness among the local community of the challenging and very real trials faced by refugees arriving in Australia.
“UnitingCare is very pleased to be supporting the Refugee Support Dinner and I encourage anyone with an interest in helping refugees resettle in this country to come along and learn more about how to become involved.”
The dinner, combining entertainment with education, will be held at Citigate, Mount Panorama, on Saturday, August 27 at 6pm.
The evening will involve a question and answer-style discussion featuring key speaker Dr Sev Ozdowski, former Human Rights Commissioner and author of the book National Inquiry Into Children in Immigration Detention: A Last Resort?
Dr Ozdowski’s report ignited national debate about Australia’s immigration detention policies and led to children being released from mandatory detention.
Much of the proceeds from the $60 ticket will go towards The Kath Knowles House of Welcome – a facility providing accommodation and support for refugees and asylum seekers in Bathurst.
The event is being sponsored by the Bathurst Refugee Support Group, The Sisters of Mercy Congregation, Rahamim Ecological Learning Community, and the Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS).
