A current Bureau of Meteorology Severe Weather Warning lists the Central Tablelands as one of the districts to be on alert for destructive winds and heavy rain.
Also on alert for high tides and damaging surf are the areas of Metropolitan Sydney, Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Hunter, Northern Tablelands and Illawarra forecast districts.
The rains come as ex-tropical cyclone Oswald moves into northern NSW and tracks southwards to reach the Illawarra coast around dawn on Tuesday morning.
NSW Police have issued a warning for motorists to reconsider their travel plans and delay their trips where possible because of the severe weather conditions.
Weather conditions are expected to worsen this afternoon with heavy rain and gale-force winds.
Motorists are asked to check on weather conditions and road closures before driving, and to delay trips where possible.
Any motorist towing a caravan or trailer needs to slow down and exercise extreme caution.
Flood warnings have been issued for several rivers in eastern NSW. Visit the Bureau of Meterology’s website here for the latest flood warning information.
