Brother John Gaven, a former bursar of St Stanislaus’ College, was yesterday found guilty on six sexual assault charges against former students.

Gaven was yesterday refused bail by Acting Judge A Garling in the District Court, Sydney Downing Centre, to re-appear for sentencing in May.
The jury in the case went out at 10.45am on Wednesday, returning with their deliberation yesterday afternoon.
Charges against Gaven included four counts of sexual assault (category three) of a person under 16 and under authority and no consent, one count of buggery and one count of sexual assault (category four) indecent act on a person under 16, under authority.
On a charge of common assault, Gaven was found not guilty.
On two further matt-ers, both sexual assault (category four), indecent assault of a person under 16 under authority, the jury was unable to agree and was discharged on those two counts.
Judge Garling refused bail, re-listing the matter before the District Court – Crime at Sydney Downing Centre for sentence at 10am on May 6, 2013.
It was recommended Gaven be placed in protective custody immediately.
