Norwood Park chairman Clive Allison had the honours of opening the crematorium, which is based in the grounds of the Bathurst cemetery.
Mr Allison said the facility ranked with the best crematoriums around the world and could cater for a variety of services.
“It’s sensational to see it opened. It’s a special facility that is close to town, but not too close. People can have a nice service and then have refreshments afterwards.”
Mr Allison said it was nice to see that the cemetery had also been beautified.
“People love this cemetery. Look around, there are so many flowers on all the memorials and it’s not even a special occasion, it’s just a special place,” he said.
General manager Stephen Beer said they wanted to wait until all the teething problems had been sorted before they held the official opening.
“We’ve had problems with the audio and visual equipment and a few other minor issues that our very capable staff have been able to handle.”
Since the crematorium opened for business on August 5, around 42 cremations and services have been held in the local chapel.
Mr Beer said the people of Bathurst had been waiting for a crematorium for a long time.
“Local people wanted to be able to have their families gather here, not have to go elsewhere. It’s a very good facility, which will look after the people of Bathurst for generations to come,” he said.
Councillor Bobby Bourke said there had been positive feedback from the community.
“I’ve had three phone calls back from families who have attended services who want to express their gratitude to council for its support of the crematorium,” he said.
