Keppel Street Newsagency sold the winning ticket, and its owner Paul Cregan said staff were over the moon with the news.
“We found out at about 2.30pm, when a message came through the ticket console,” he said.
Mr Cregan said he was unsure whether the winning ticket was registered or not.
“The winning ticket was number 56647, from draw number 9877, but they don’t tell us whether the purchaser was registered,” he said.
“We’re just hoping whoever wins is a local and comes and tells us.”
While he couldn’t be 100 per cent sure, Mr Cregan said he suspected the ticket was purchased at the newsagency either last Tuesday or Wednesday, and encouraged everyone who bought a ticket to come in and have it checked.
Mr Cregan said it was not the first time the newsagency had sold a winning ticket – in April last year, a $200,000 ticket was sold in the $5 jackpot lottery.
“We’ve sold a lot of winning tickets, but they tend to be more second prizes,” Mr Cregan said.
“We sold one which won second prize in Oz Lotto about three months ago. They won either $20,000 or $30,000,” he said.
“But it’s been a while since we’ve sold a first prize.
“When we heard the news we were jumping out of our skin.”
Having sold the winning ticket, Mr Cregan said he expected more luck to come.
“I’d tell everyone to keep trying, because once we win one thing we usually get on a roll,” he said.
“I’d definitely expect a few more to come our way. These things tend to come in threes.”
Keppel Street Newsagency junior manager Jess Cregan said the $2 jackpot lottery had been popular lately, although it depended on the jackpot as to which tickets were selling the most.
