CANOWINDRA: In what has been described by organisers as "perfect conditions" the National Balloon Championships fired up for the first day of competition in Canowindra. With ideal weather forecast for the remainder of the week, spectators are encouraged to follow the balloons as they make their journey to various targets around the region.
ORANGE: WHEN people think of Victoria Cross recipients from Orange, Sir Neville Howse comes to mind. Few people know there was another VC recipient from Orange and staff of the Central West Libraries want that to change. John Patrick Hamilton VC was a 19-year-old butcher when he signed up to the Australian Imperial Force during World War I .
COWRA: Minister for Primary Industries and Member for Burrinjuck, Katrina Hodgkinson, announced that the new bridge and road at Wyangala Dam will be opened on 30 April and traffic to Wyangala village will be diverted from the road over the dam crest.
ORANGE: EIGHT of Australia’s best bell ringers will be in Orange on Saturday to ring Holy Trinity Church’s first full peal, in honour of Archdeacon Frank Hetherington’s retirement. The eight bells in the Holy Trinity bell tower, installed in 2007, will ring out for three hours across Orange, from 2pm until about 5pm.
WELLINGTON: Merino Fred is among the most famous rams in the world following his bow to the royals on Good Friday at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. It took 14 days for owner Jim Murray from Dripstone, near Wellington, to train Fred after he was notified by Australian Wool Innovations that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge would be entering the pavilion.
BATHURST: The Bathurst Motor Festival was one of the best places in Bathurst to spend the Easter holiday.
FORBES: While it might have once been considered reckless to produce cotton in Forbes, local farmers could view the crop increasingly as a viable option following an information meeting held recently. Five farmers attended the cotton information meeting which was run by Monsanto and Cotton Seed Distributors (CSD) to gauge the community’s interest in the industry.
DUBBO: The RSPCA could hit full capacity by the end of the week unless some of the dogs in their care are adopted. There were 18 dogs waiting for good homes, while another 10 are currently been desexed, given health checks and vaccinations to get them ready to also.

ORANGE: Justice Crew’s Emmanuel Rodriguez, better known as E-Man, came to Orange on Thursday to host school holiday dance classes. The workshops were held at the PCYC and were open to children eight to 12 years old who wanted a chance to learn from one of the industry’s most exciting dancers.
DUBBO: Macquarie Street was blocked for more than an hour on Monday afternoon as emergency services dealt with a potential fuel leak. Dubbo Fire and Rescue were called before 1.30pm on Monday afternoon after the liquid coming from a water tap at the rear of the premises smelt like fuel.
FORBES: The 2014 Sydney Royal Easter Show has been Dennis Moxey’s most successful show to date, having achieved some outstanding results in the Cattle-Beef division this year. Mr Moxey won two major awards, the Most Successful Santa Gertrudis Exhibitor and the Best Maintained Santa Gertrudis Team, over five head.
CANOWINDRA: The Central West is gearing up for the Camp Quality Tractor Trek later in September, with $30,000 already raised to support children with cancer. Canowindra will be one of the many stops along the convoy's journey, which will cover 313km over three days.
ORANGE: Scavengers have rifled through donations left at the doors of St Vincent de Paul and in the donation boxes in McNamara Street on Saturday night leaving clothes, household items and toys strewn all over the footpath. St Vincent de Paul mobilised its specially tasked team of ‘weekend warrior’ volunteers after mass on Sunday to clean up the mess with one-and-a-half skip bins of items left in the charity bins and on the footpath unable to be passed on for sale at the charity shop.
COWRA: Pine Creek Angus Stud can add two important Sydney Royal Easter Show titles to their already impressive list of achievements. The Fuller family and their team at PC have taken out the inaugural champion interbreed breeders group, with their breed of Angus. This was followed with a win in the best Angus exhibit, in the senior female category with PC Miss Shiraz H449.
DUBBO: McDonald’s has renewed an attempt to use its speaker technology to receive orders made at a 24-hour drive-through lane at Dubbo. The fast food giant wants to remove a condition set last year stipulating that between the hours of 11pm and 6am it switch to serving customers from a window where staff were on duty so as not to disturb residents.
PARKES: Tickets are now on sale for the Parkes Musical & Dramatic Society production Steel Magnolias. The two-act play, directed by Lyn Townsend, starts its eight performance season at The Little Theatre in Bogan Street on Saturday, May 17.
DUBBO: The heartache of a gravely ill baby boy and his loving parents from Dubbo has brought Prince William and wife Kate close to tears. The royal couple were visiting children's hospice Bear Cottage at Manly when they met 10-month-old Max McIntyre and his parents, Rob and Amy.
WELLINGTON: Five years ago Inland Waterways Rejuvenation Association president Matt Hanson could never have imagined how big the Lake Burrendong Fishing Classic would become. This year 68 sponsors from throughout the central west rallied behind the event, resulting with a prize pool of $50,000 including a car, boat, holidays and fishing gear.
PARKES: A digital speed monitor trailer has been placed in Victoria Street in Parkes to prompt drivers to watch their speed and keep to the limit, as part of Parkes Shire Council’s current Slow Down In My Street campaign.
ORANGE: Orange has seen some excellent results returned from this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show livestock and meat competitions. The Javid Square Meaters stud, near Orange, had stunning success with a purebred steer entered into the “hoof and hook” competition, which includes judging of the live animal and then of its carcass.
MUDGEE: The Mid-Western Region launches itself to an international audience again as Mudgee hosts the 2014 Trans-Tasman Touch Football Series.

LITHGOW: The wildlife had to take a back seat in the Newnes forest over the Easter break when hordes of Venturer Scouts went bush for their annual Dragonskin competition.
MUDGEE: Around 800 competitors took part in the Easter Three Days, the biggest part of the Easter Orienteering Carnival, which was held in the Clandulla area over the long weekend.
